Yesterday when I woke up, I learned that a publisher by whom one of my shorts has been accepted is now seeking novel manuscripts until March. I took this as good news. I found a manuscript that I felt would fit and edited it a bit. I'm not quite satisfied yet, but I plan to take my flash drive to school with me today so I can finish with the first three chapters/query. Anyway, I have high hopes since I've already been approved once through them. Being superstitious, I thanked the talisman I bought at Pagan Pride Saturday; the Green Man, representative of new beginnings. That was early yesterday...
Last night, the October issue of a magazine to whom I'd submitted was released. The editor had told me they wanted to include my story in this issue if I could make it longer and scarier. I took a bit too long re-submitting it, so it wasn't in there. I was still a bit disappointed, even though I didn't really think I'd be in there. So, I turned my thoughts back to the Green Man. "How dare you get my hopes up!" I suppose it's not the Green Man's fault... After all, it's MY fault I waited so long to re-submit the story. Still, the bad news came the same day I attributed good writing news to a "lucky charm," and was let down. Not sure what to think of that. My superstition only goes so far, after all. Today was warmer than I'd have liked (especially given that the projected high temp given yesterday was 70, lying bastards), but otherwise it was a perfect October day. I went to two flea markets, a used bookstore, Augusta Pagan Pride, and the budget theater to see Final Destination 5 again.
At the flea market, I got Cry_Wolf on DVD for $3. Halloween-appropriate movies are great. Just yesterday I got four: The Reaping, Candyman, The Exorcist: The Beginning, and Dead Silence. I also saw The Black Cauldron for the first time last night. So, that was one cheap purchase. At 2nd & Charles (secondhand bookstore), I got some All Hallow's Read books out of the free bin, as well as a Charles Addams comic collection, two Ray Bradbury story collections (R is for Rocket and The Toynbee Convector), and, because they didn't have it on DVD, Ernest Scared Stupid (the Halloween movie) for $6. "West of October" was in The Toynbee Convector, so I read it again a little later to pass the time at Lake Olmstead Park. Funny that I read that story the same day I got a Charles Addams collection.. They borrowed a lot from each other, which is another reason I love Ray Bradbury. From there my sister and I got some lunch, then hit up Lake Olmstead Park for Pagan Pride. Ashleah's all about that witchy stuff. hehe While looking over the vendors' stuff, I found a pewter charm called The Green Man. Tradition says he represents resurrection and regrowth every spring. Plus it's cool-looking. A bearded man's face, but the beard and crazy hair are all made out of leaves.Kinda creepy, but up my alley. I liked the whole "Man representing resurrection" idea and thought I could use it in my writing, but wouldn't be able to recall the myth exactly unless I'd bought it. It was only $8, and I thought the story idea was worth that. hehe Inspiration is priceless, after all... but, if you have to possess something without getting busted for shoplifting, you might as well read the pricetag. In addition to the Green Man necklace, I got a cool bracelet, some Halloween magnets, and five raffle tickets. Turns out, hardly ANYONE bought raffle tickets. They sold exactly as many tickets as there were raffle items. So, we got five things. Ashleah got the amethyst necklace, some magnets, earrings, and scented handmade soap, and I got a dreamcatcher. Really, the dreamcatcher was the only raffle item I wanted. hehe We left not long after the raffle drawing, then went to the budget theater to see what time Final Destination 5 would start. We had about an hour, so we went to Moe's for supper and then back to the movie afterward. On the ride home from the movie, I talked about all the different interpretations one could imply from the movie's ending, and how each franchise entry contributed different circumstances that could be played with while analyzing 5. Ashleah gave me the idea of writing my senior thesis paper on it. I'm a fine arts major, film is an art... plus, I already have five sources, in addition to the movie novelizations and New Line Books' original Final Destination novels. I've read the first two and own the first. The others are expensive and hard to track down cuz they're out of print. Nevertheless, it wouldn't be hard to write such a paper. So even though I didn't get any writing done (except this blog), I received inspiration to write two different literary work |
