A young man in a Nikola Tesla tee-shirt took pity upon her and introduced himself as Steve. She could tell that, despite his geeky exterior and the assumption that he was out of his element, he had been drinking to excess. Eve introduced herself, only to be polite, and Steve shouted, "Your name is Eve? Well, then, I guess tonight is your night!"
Eve buried her face into the palm of her hand, hoping nobody had heard Steve over the so-called music. Suddenly, Jennifer appeared and excused herself and Eve away from the inebriated geek. Eve squeaked, "Thank you."
Jennifer said, "Yeah, that guy was totally gross. You should go stand near Todd, over there." Eve followed Jennifer's pointing finger to a handsome jock in the center of a crowd. Jennifer continued, "He's dreamy. Besides, guys are desperate to kiss a girl at midnight on New Year's Eve, and I doubt you wanted that guy to be your first."
Trying not to blush, Eve asked, "Why would anyone want to kiss me at midnight?"
"There are more guys than girls here, and the superstitious believe that if you're kissing someone at midnight, your new year will be full of romance."
Eve smiled. "What's wrong with a little romance?"
Jennifer smiled back condescendingly. "Loosen up a bit and you might eventually find out. Here, have some champagne." Jennifer moved Eve's glass to her friend's lips. Begrudgingly, Eve drank it in great gulps.
Before they knew it, the second hand pointed at exactly 11:59 p.m. "You know," Eve said, "This stuff isn't bad. I think I'll go get some more."
"That's the spirit!" Jennifer called as Eve waded through the other party-goers.
When Eve reached the bar, she was surrounded by guys, including Steve. He grinned and said, "Hey, it's Eve! Just in time to see the ball drop!"
She blushed again as she followed Steve's gaze to the New Year's Eve celebration on the television. As the countdown began, another male voice asked, "Hey, did Steve just say this girl's name is Eve?" Eve looked up. It was Todd, who was every bit as dreamy as Jennifer thought.
Steve slurred, "Yeah, her name's Eve! It's her night!"
Suddenly, the countdown from ten reached one, and three young men, including Todd and Steve, kissed Eve simultaneously. After all the happy New Year wishes and "Auld Lang Syne," Eve shakily walked back to Jennifer.
Jennifer smiled. "Well?"
Eve beamed, exclaiming, "I think I'm going to like this year."
