So, about the whole #NotMyPresidentsDay thing... Organizing protests is perfectly healthy, and legal, especially in a free country with an unpopular leader. BUT.... dedicating an established national holiday like Presidents' Day as "Not My President's Day" seems to me like a step in the wrong direction. It implies that Presidents' Day is only for current and/or living former Presidents. It's a day to remember all the memorable Presidents in US history. And THIS year's PD was devoted to trashing out the sitting POTUS instead of honoring those who came before him. I'd like to think that in the future, the Trump era will be largely forgotten by the history books, just as Japanese history downplays the attack on Pearl Harbor (from what I've been told by an Army brat friend of mine who went to high school in Japan during his senior year). And if someone in the future asks how we spent Presidents' Day 2017, what will we say? That we skipped it that year because we didn't like the guy in office? Protesting is in The Bill of Rights, and I have no problem with them... as long as they don't overshadow actual holidays that recognize milestones in history. The collective birthday celebration of both Abraham Lincoln and George Washington are a big deal. It''s a shame to disgrace those great men by reducing their holiday to a day for trashing out a very bad President... even if he does deserve it. Maybe today should be Not My President's Day... or this past Sunday. Hopefully, if there's cause for it in 2018, it won't be as disrespectful to the former leaders of this great country.
