NBT: What is the working title of your book?
RH: Relic, but it's the official title, as the book's already available.
NBT: Where did the idea come from for the book?
RH: My sister took me to see Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera in 2003, and I wondered what it would be like to update the story, giving it a Hollywood twist.
NBT: What genre does your book fall under?
RH: I usually write horror, but I consider Relic more of a thriller.
NBT: Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?
RH: I would want a cast of actors who've been typecast as horror stars, if only because that's a theme of the book. Simmons, the protagonist, was inspired by Robert Englund, who played the Phantom of the Opera in the late 1980s, but sadly Englund is too old for the part now. It would have to be someone who can act without relying on good looks. I've got nothing...
NBT: What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
RH: Actor R.L. Simmons, who has been disfigured by an accident, finds true love, which may or may not be destroyed by a stalker... or the actor himself.
NBT: Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?
RH: It has already been published by Firefly & Wisp Books.
NBT: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?
RH: I wrote the first draft in about a month.
NBT: What other books would you compare this book to within your genre?
RH: The obvious example is Gaston Leroux's classic about the Phantom. Otherwise, the idea is an old one; two people with troubles meet and fall in love, only to be confronted both by outer forces as well as interior ones that threaten to destroy their happiness. One that I can think of off the top of my head is Stephen King's Rose Madder.
NBT: Who or What inspired you to write this book?
RH: My sister, whose love for Phantom made me try to see if I could match it in a Hollywood setting. She loved it, so I think I succeeded!
NBT: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?
RH: Well, it takes place mostly during October, so Halloween plays a big part of the plot. Since Halloween is a popular holiday, hopefully that will draw in some readers; along with the love story for romance fans!
