December 20th marks the birth date of two of my family members: my mother, and her father, who died before I was born. I smile every time I recall the story of how Mama Ruby was accused by her doctors of "holding the baby in" until after midnight so that my mom would be born on the same day as her father. My grandfather's name was John, and my mother was named Johnnie Sue, after her dad... something she disliked, but since everyone called her Sue in her youth, she didn't mind too much. Recently, she's had to go by Johnnie on official terms, as that was her legal birth name, and all of her doctors and insurance agents have that name down in their records. Still... I suppose there are worse things than being named after one's father.... whether they share a birthday or not. Happy birthday, mom! And to John Thomas Cheeks, happy birthday to you as well, wherever you may be. I only wish I could have met you.
